pimlico school, lupus street, westminster, london.
greater london council architects department / john bancroft, 1966-1970
I believe the correct architectural term is "motherf****r".
one of the most moving buildings in all of london, forever in danger of demolition. like much of our brutalist heritage, this big girl suffers from not being loved by those responsible for her.
for her bland replacement, look here: www.westminster.gov.uk/educationandlearning/schoolsandcol...
the loss of this building is a real tragedy - architecturally speaking - and london seems to have become an experiment in blind liberalism.
bad news from the 20th century society here: www.c20society.org.uk/docs/casework/2007_pimlico_school.html

07 Ноябрь 2009, 07:59 Gladys Thong Schoolchilden and teachers have complained for years about 'cooking' under the glass in summer. It has FAILED in its function. And yet this is supposed to be an outstanding example of its type. I'd like to understand better why anyone thinks this building should be saved. It's not a piece of art - it has a job to do.
08 Ноябрь 2009, 00:09 seier+seier dear p.h.you are right, it has a job to do.and you are not right: it is in fact also a piece of art.both may apply to architecture. but it MUST work, it MUST function. that is a given.in my experience, there are technical solutions to windows that don't perform and in my experience these technical solutions are a whole lot cheaper than tearing down a house and building a new one.so I am guessing there is a hidden agenda here and most likely it is the unholy marriage between property speculation and the kind of political populism that offers to symbolically solve problems by tearing down modernist buildings. and I don't care for either.

absolutely wonderful building!
in my honest opinion, modernism was the most
amazing period in architecture and art...
and i wish architectural appreciation from
these days will come back...
09 Ноябрь 2009, 07:13 seier+seier I think that is happening in a lot of countries (it certainly is here). the English are not doing so well in that regard...
