One rider on a timed lap. Once the time trials got going this was the only angle I got through the crowd but I thought I'd have a play in PS. It's not perfect but I'm happy with the result after my first try.
I tried the new Quick Selection tool in PS CS3 but wasn't good enough in this situation so I manually selected the rider and all the little holes, added a motion blurred layer of the image, loaded the selection them rubbed over the rider to clear the rider but keep the bg blurred.
What I'm not happy with is the slight "glow" around some edges, e.g. his arms, not sure what I did wrong there, too much feathering? Also I wanted to add radial blurs to the wheels to give them a spinning look but the layers in PS got me confused so I gave up for the moment.
For the best of the Tour de France photos head here.
And for a quick report on the day and the rest of the pics, head over to my .letourdefrancelondon2007 set.

... or you could ask him to go around again,
only a bit faster!
Seriously, though: a striking result.
Patience rewarded.
01 Апрель 2010, 14:04 lordofthebings Nice shot

Yeah I should have asked him to go around
again, damn it. ;-)
Seriously, though, thank you. By this time I
had been standing in the same spot in the
crowd for 4 or 5 hours and my legs and feet
were aching from lack of movement I guess.I had the idea of the photo in mind before I
went up to London but didn't think I could do
it, though I think it looks pretty good here.Thank you all for your comments. :-)
02 Апрель 2010, 12:55 minoltacamera6 good photo
02 Апрель 2010, 18:23 Kol Tregaskes Ta very much. :-)
03 Апрель 2010, 13:43 Lord Strobey I'm sorry, but I always prefer it when this is done on the camera.
04 Апрель 2010, 04:51 Kol Tregaskes I know what you mean, I didn't have the option to do this with the very limited window that I could see through the crowd. I think this, though, gives a different effect. :-)
04 Апрель 2010, 10:35 Borry209 I rarely ever like after photo enhancements, as in never before this :P, but in this case it was well done. To be honest even the rider I'd bet would like this. The original just makes him look slow and the audience doesn't seem to be paying much attention to the guy, a few seem to be posing for the shot :P
05 Апрель 2010, 04:57 Kol Tregaskes Thanks, I'm trying not to over do the enhancements (as I have in some photos). I did it for a bit of fun and to learn Photoshop, it could be better. LOL, yeah some are looking down the track for the next rider I guess, though there was at least 30 seconds in between each rider.
05 Апрель 2010, 21:49 Kevin.Chang STOP Photoshop....
06 Апрель 2010, 09:53 Kol Tregaskes LOL, if I could pan the camera I would but like I said this was impossible - I had a small pocket to view through, most shots had heads in the way, panning was not an option. Cool pic!

Great shot. Speed just right to get blur in
the spokes and still freeze the rider.
A ha.. I just read the full story, it's a
great edit.
06 Апрель 2010, 20:49 fexy01 (away for a while) Great shot.

Great shot. I understand the difficulty of
catching just the right shot when one has to
contend with the crowds. I like what you've
done in PS. I prefer a pan with the camera,
but this works very well. Nicely done.
