The Thames Barrier is the world's second largest movable barrier. It is a flood control structure located downstream of central London. The barriers purpose is to prevent London from being flooded by an exceptionally high tide moving up from the sea.

I've never seen this or anything like it before. I'm so glad you posted it. And, as always, it's a simply gorgeous photo.
