Inspired by charcoal drawings made on location within Her Majesty's Tower of London, this is one of the series of 30 paintings commissioned from Stephen B Whatley for The Tower in 2000. In this particular area of The Tower it was not possible to set up a large canvas, as the area is generally flooded with people.
The Bloody Tower was built in the early 1220s; while the upperpart of the present tower was largely reconstructed in 1360 during the reign of Edward III.
The tower was once known as The Garden Tower as it adjoined the Lieutenant's garden - but some time during the Tudor period it became known as The Bloody Tower because (or, so James I was told when he visited the Tower in 1604) it was where the 'Princes in The Tower' had been murdered; the histry of which is inclusive. Nevertheless this gruesome segment of history was another of the stories depicted in another of Stephen's paintings, to be shown soon, of 'The Murder of The Two Princes'.
Through the archway, can be seen Traitors' Gate, that leads from the outer wall of The Tower to The River Thames.

25 Июль 2010, 14:56 Mystic Ed & Fluffy At a glance the colors are relentlessly sunny, but on closer examination the effects you achieve go beyond splashy colors; it's like using a happy melody to sing a grim and haunting history.
