The monument was designed in 1671 by Sir Christoper Wren, to commemorate the Great Fire of London. It is202 feet tall - the exact distance it stands from the bakers in Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire of 1666 started.
There are 311 steps to the viewing platform.
This is a view from the bottom.
The staircase is very narrow, not ideal if you have a large camera bag!
I have some infrared pictures taken from the top of the monument in my infrared set.

11 Май 2010, 20:32 DB-UK Great shot. I like it.Spooky. I was actually taking pictures at the same place yesterday - small world eh ? I only had my take everywhere compact camera with me though and it really wasn't up to getting this particular shot. Can I ask what settings you used ? ISO/shutter/apature ? I converted some of my shots from the top to HDRs which you can see a couple of on my Flickr page.

Thanks for the comments Andrea and Paul,Hi Darren, yes small world indeed. That
wasn't you up the top talking on a cellphone
was it? I went up at about 13:30 with a
large group of Germans. I had to rush as I
had to get back home to pick the children up
from school.
I like your HDR shot. I have tried a couple
of HDR pictures, but have not been happy with
the results. On checking the settings, they were 0.7
seconds F5.6 at 400ASA. I put the camera
flat on it's back on the perspex shield at
the bottom of the tower. I had it set to
aperture priority with a two second self
timer. The camera is a Minolta 7D with a
17-35 at the wide end, the image is a crop
from full frame
12 Май 2010, 13:00 cazphoto.co.uk Hmmm, very nice. I haven been up the Monument, but it was ages ago. Maybe I should make the trip again :-)

Looking at it again, it reminds me of an
Escher-like concept. Is it going up? Or is
it going down? Kewl nautilus.
If you you used it like a pinwheel you could
hypnotize someone with it.
Ok, I'm getting too abstract for a Wednesday
morning.
13 Май 2010, 20:58 GROGG WOW!
14 Май 2010, 06:03 Graeme Smith Very nice! Has a kind of abstract feel to it… I like it.
14 Май 2010, 18:34 DB-UK I love the pictures of stairs, this one is great!
14 Май 2010, 22:59 gracias! Nick - yes, could well have been me as I was there at about that time and did take a call while I was there. Good idea to put you camera on the flat surface at the bottom - I must try that. An HDR of that angle might work well. My compact doesn't seem to want to auto bracket at speeds less than 1/30th though so will take the 20D next time. Thanks for the tips.
