25 Июнь 2010, 07:08 khalid [Comment for Seth Frantzman re: suicide bombing in Judaism]The early rabbis typically accept self-immolation in situations of military desperation, to avoid humiliation and to impress the enemy. The deaths of Saul and Samson were regarded as exemplary.[1] And in 'the Jewish Middle Ages, enthusiasm for martyrdom (at least in Ashkenaz - northern Europe) became so great that it proved a positive danger to Jewish existence.’[2] Religious voices raised in support of 20th century Zionism could link this tradition to their own militancy.[3] Hence Avram Kook, the first Ashkenazy Chief Rabbi of mandate Palestine (in Walter Wurzburger’s words) permitted individuals to volunteer for suicide missions when carried out in the interest of the collective Jewish community. In other words, an act that would be illicit if performed to help individuals, would be legitimate if intended for the benefit of the community.[4] [1] Droge and Tabor, 87, 100. See also Sidney Hoenig, ‘The Sicarii in Masada – Glory or Infamy?’ Tradition 11 (1970), 5-30; Sidney Goldstein, Suicide in Rabbinic Literature (Hoboken, 1989), 41-2.[2] Daniel Boyarin, Dying for God: Martyrdom and the Making of Christianity and Judaism (Stanford, 1999), 171. It is not insignificant that ‘during the Moslem period, mass suicides among Jews do not seem to have occurred’ (Goldstein, 49).[3] The former Ashkenazy Chief Rabbi of Israel, Shlomo Goren, allowed suicide as an alternative to prisoner-of-war status, following the examples of Saul and Masada (Goldstein, 49).[4] Walter S. Wurzburger, Ethics of Responsibility: Pluralistic Approaches to Covenantal Ethics (Philadelphia, 1994), 92. For more, see Goldstein’s chapter entitled ‘Suicide as an Act of Martyrdom’, pp.41-50.

"israeli occupation" of a leand we
have been living in for 3000 years.. well its
just a codename for "we are the same
dark ages racist muslims cant see jews and
christians and copts and kurds in the middle
east, they have to drive them out using
terror and false historical
naratives"..lets see syria give its kurds even the
slightest possibility of voting.. but you
wouldnt march for them would you? no, the
racism starts with the jews - first you drive
them out of arab countries leaving 1 million
jewish refugees with nothing, wiping away our
history of thousands of years in iraq, yemes,
syria - and now for stage two, lets wipe out
their only homeland also..
of course, its called peace, silly us..
25 Июнь 2010, 18:19 khalid livni3,What you describe as the "dark age racist muslims" have been described by many leading Jewish historians as the people responsible for the "Golden Era of the Jews". As a Muslim, I am very proud of the fact that Muslim countries were largely responsible for saving the Jews from xenophobic Europe for many centuries, and created an environment in which Jews could thrive as never before. Here for example is prominent Israeli figure Uri Avnery: Every honest Jew who knows the history of his people cannot but feel a deep sense of gratitude to Islam, which has protected the Jews for fifty generations, while the Christian world persecuted the Jews and tried many times "by the sword" to get them to abandon their faith. There no evidence whatsoever of any attempt to impose Islam on the Jews. As is well known, under Muslim rule the Jews of Spain enjoyed a bloom the like of which the Jews did not enjoy anywhere else until almost our time. Poets like Yehuda Halevy wrote in Arabic, as did the great Maimonides. In Muslim Spain, Jews were ministers, poets, scientists. In Muslim Toledo, Christian, Jewish and Muslim scholars worked together and translated the ancient Greek philosophical and scientific texts. That was, indeed, the Golden Age.It should also be noted that it was the Muslims who let the Jews back into Jerusalem after they were kicked out by the Romans (and later the Crusaders). Here is a rabbi from the Ottoman empire writing centuries ago:Here in the land of the Turks we have nothing to complain of. We possess great fortunes; much gold and silver are in our hands. We are not oppressed with heavy taxes and our commerce is free and unhindered. Rich are the fruits of the earth. Everything is cheap and every one of us lives in peace and freedom...[1]As for the Kurds... as a matter of fact, at the very protest shown in the photo above, I signed a petition supporting more rights for Kurds. I do think they deserve more autonomy and that the way certain middle eastern dictators have oppressed them. I'm no fan of the Syrian government or Turkish army either. You have to learn that two wrongs don't make a right, and to recognize that modern Israel (founded by atheistic/secular European people) has nothing do with biblical Israelites, whereas the indigenous Palestinian people (Christian and Muslim alike) probably do have a lot of Jewish and other ancestors whose roots in the region are far deeper than yours.[1] Philip Mansel. 1995. Constantinople: City of the World's desire, 1453-1924. Penguin Books, p. 15

Thank you for such wonderful information Khalid. I've been blessed by it.
27 Июнь 2010, 00:18 khalid You do know that the first ever ethnic cleansing of 'palestine' in the 20th century occurred in August of 1929 in Hebron when Arab Muslims murdered scores of Jews and drove hundreds out of their homes where they had lived for centuries. There were also 900,000 Jews that were ethnically cleansed from Arab countries in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. Many of these Jews today live in Israel. 1 more thing: do you have any proof that Christian and Muslim Arabs in Gaza or Judea/Samaria have Jewish ancestors with deeper roots than real Jews?Didn't think so.
27 Июнь 2010, 10:00 intasko "biblical Israelites" was what was said.
27 Июнь 2010, 12:14 Palestine Forever.
ironmountain:Yes, there were riots in 1929 in which 67
Jews were unjustly killed. These riots were
a (wrong-headed) mob reaction to the Zionists
who were already planning to create a state
on Palestinian land. The people who murdered
these Jews were apprehended; 195 Arabs were
sentenced, 17 to death. This was a travesty, but it was not ethnic
cleansing. Many Jews survived by hiding in
the houses of their friendly Arab neighbours,
who protected them. The mob violence was
directed at the Ashkenazi -- immigrants from
Europe -- not the Sephardic Jews (who the
Zionists still look down upon). And of
course, you are ignoring that Jews lived
peacefully amongst the Arabs for many
hundreds of years; this is not a
characteristic incident, but one that arose
out of the tensions caused by Zionism. As for Jews in Arab lands -- many countries
still have their Jewish populations, and for
the most part, they are happy minorities even in Iran. It is well-known that the Zionists actually had to terrorize Jewish
populations in Iraq and elsewhere to "inspire" them to
move to Israel. And most importantly, what
happens to Jews in distant lands does not
justify Jewish oppression towards others
elsewhere. Palestinians are not responsible
for other Arabs do, anymore than Jews are
responsible for the apparent crucifixion.
You are unwittingly employing a very
anti-semitic sort of group libel. As for proof that Christians and Muslim Arabs
have Jewish ancestors at least as deep as
Ashkenazi Jews -- there is ample and
uncontroversial proof from the geneticists
who have studied these populations. Not just
that the Arab population there is descended
from the Israelites, but that the Ashkenazi
Jews also mixed with Europeans during their
many centuries in Europe. "Part, or perhaps the majority, of the
Muslim Arabs in this country descended from
local inhabitants, mainly Christians and
Jews, who had converted in the seventh
century AD... These local inhabitants, in
turn, were descendants of the core population
that had lived in the area for several
centuries, some even since prehistoric times.
-[Full journal citation] (Note that several of the authors of the
study are Israeli Jews.) (Not that the genetics matter-- it wouldn't
be right for the descendants of the the
Americans Indians to slaughter and drive away
the white people from North America a
thousand years from now.)Let's also not forget that modern Israelis
generally aren't religious at all. The
founding fathers of Zionism certainly
weren't. Zionism is thus a corruption of
Judaism -- a reduction of Jewishness to
ethnicity and shared circumstance, rather
than a grand set of principles.
Ideologically, it has a lot more in common
with the grotesquely racist ethnic
nationalisms of Europe than it does with the
grand ethics of the Halacha. If you were to
transport the Palestinians and the modern
Israelis back in time, the ancient Israelites
would find that it is the Palestinians who
more closely share their metaphysics and
lifestyle.Didn't think so
No, you just didn't think. I see that you don't use your real
name/identity; I guess somewhere deep inside
you know your stance is unjustifiable.

29 Июнь 2010, 08:29 Kombizz Khalid focuses on Ashkenazi Jews and not on the large number of Sephardi Jews who have lived in the Mid East for generations from Biblical times. I personally know of one Jewish family who literally fled from their Muslim hosts in Egypt to save their lives.Khalid moans about the non religious Jews in Israel but then goes and uses their statements against the Jewish state. Why doesn't he quote from religious Jews who support Israel? As humankind in general, Khalid uses whatever he can to support his position whether it be true or false.
