I got up early this morning to walk alongside the river to Richmond. There was something 'strange' about the light this morning, there was high cloud which I expected to disperse, but it got worse and in the end I gave up taking photos. I found out when I returned home that there was a big fire at an oil depot about 20 miles North of London, and it was the smoke from this that had caused the unusual light. I've certainly never caught Hammersmith Bridge looking quite like this subsequently.
This is the second version of Hammersmith Bridge, there was an earlier one designed by Tierney Clarke, however this was reconstructed to designs by Bazalgette in the mid 19th century, which is how it appears today. I have an antique print of the original which does seem to have been quite elegant. The Bazalgette redesign used the brick piers of the earlier bridge.
