My best pic on May 5, in my opinion. These four houses on Newington Green constitute the oldest known surviving brick terrace in London, dating from 1658 - hence they were built before the Great Fire. The reason I think it's my best pic for the day is partly because I had no pre-meditated intention of taking it - I just happened by, but also the 476 bus got stuck in just exactly the right place for long enough for me to wake up and take this shot. I'll likely never be able to take one like this again (I've got plenty just showing the facades full-on, of course.)

Before the fire? Really? Cool....--
Seen in my contacts' photos. (?)
18 Февраль 2010, 00:21 Fin Fahey Yeah, check Pevsner. Esther, you do know that this is my tarty entry for the '24 Hours of Flickr' thing (see list of pools right)? Just thought GWL & NE London should be in there, though I must admit we usually have too much class...

I don't have Pevsner :(might need to check abe for it.--
Seen in my recent comments. (?)
18 Февраль 2010, 21:48 Fin Fahey You need six Pevsners for all of London. I have one. JC has two. Pray that we do not meet someone what is totally Pevsnerised, I could go that way...

19 Февраль 2010, 20:28 Fin Fahey No. Those are the old ones.
19 Февраль 2010, 23:54 Fin Fahey I meant the modern, more complete set, what includes Walthamstow, you might wanna know innit.

Ah, you mean abe has let me down?? Damn...--

21 Февраль 2010, 01:40 Fin Fahey No (I want the older versions too, actually), just the up-to-date Pevsner consists of six books for London - NSEW, City and Westminster (the latest and 'final' is East, which I *must* have). Sorry - not too articulate last night, Esther, hope I didn't sound rude, this weekend has turned into an unintended holiday with all that implies...But it's true what I said about this terrace - much modified, but they are fundamentally from the 1650s - Grade I listed. I lived just round the corner for years without realising what a gem this terrace was...
21 Февраль 2010, 09:42 Capo2 Strange thing is, if they were buit in the 1650s, that would more than likely mean that they were built during the Interregnum - and I can't think of any other building that was put up during that period. Maybe you've come up with a new architectural epoch- how about coming up with a name for it?
21 Февраль 2010, 11:14 Fin Fahey It's not my invention, Capo2. I can see you think I'm taking the mickey :)No - all I'm doing is citing Nikolaus Pevsner, who may, of course, be wrong, but he is a citable authority. Check page 695 of London 4:North (2002 edition):Verbatim:'...London's oldest surviving brick terrace (Nos, 52-55), dated 1658. It gives a good idea of speculative building in London before the Great Fire.'But to be honest, there is really unlikely to be any period of post-Dark Age English history, not even a single year, when someone has not built houses, whatever the political circumstances...

This is really interesting.
H i, Esther, good to meet you last night.
Oh, no, Fin, you could never be rude!!!!
22 Февраль 2010, 11:00 Dan K ™ Good call Fin, I knew these were of note but didn't realised they were that old.
23 Февраль 2010, 10:57 aka Jon Spence Nice to see London on "24 hours of flickr". Current tags out of 5.2K photos - London (74), cats (84), dogs (101), sunsets (111), flowers (233). In fairness, the other tags are international, but even so!
23 Февраль 2010, 11:00 Fin Fahey Well, 'London' is always one of the top most popular Flickr tags (though to be fair to New Yorkers, they have a split between 'NYC', 'New York City" and 'New York'). Not too bad, coming fifth against those other tags, though I'd reckon...Oh, and thanks, Dan. I can't believe that I lived close to these for years without giving them a second glance...
24 Февраль 2010, 01:09 Jean-Pierre-Montauban Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Georgian London, and we'd love to have this added to the group!
24 Февраль 2010, 10:17 Fin Fahey Well, it's added, jean-pierre. But I should point out that this is very pre-Georgian. But it would be part of the city's fabric in Georgian times, so fair enough, I suppose...
25 Февраль 2010, 02:15 Jean-Pierre-Montauban Thank you very much.In fact, this group is not about Georgian architecture and Georgian arts exclusively. It is about the London where the Georgians lived. So,only photos of post-Georgian buildings are not allowed.
25 Февраль 2010, 20:20 Fin Fahey That seems reasonable. Thanks, I'll see what more I have to add...
26 Февраль 2010, 03:30 Jean-Pierre-Montauban I very much thank you for your contribution;this is very nice of you, thank you so much.
