Note to members of Guess Where London group - I need your help. As you can see from the comments below, I don't actually know where this picture was taken, but I wondered whether someone might recognise the spot. It's 1982, or thereabouts. I'm sheltering from the rain, underneath a building with round concrete pillars, which are visible in the next shot in my stream. Any help would be much appreciated.
03 Февраль 2010, 05:42 Simon Crubellier Just great - I'm trying to work out whereabout this is, though.
03 Февраль 2010, 21:40 Herschell Hershey Thanks, Simon. I'm working from a very faulty memory - it may not even be the South Bank. I think it's somewhere near Tower Bridge, but that may be wrong.
04 Февраль 2010, 03:15 Anti Matter You got me on this one to! I will be up town on saturday, so I shll me looking out for this and if I find it, take a 'now' shot. The thing that is getting me, is the shape of the embankment wall. There are no lamps on the square part to the left of the image. Also, the very fact it is plain and square has thrown me out. The embankment, west of tower bridge has the lamps with the light strung between them. Now they been there for a hell of a lot longer than 1982. East of tower bridge, there is no embankment walls that look like that. Oh..what a dilema lol.

Jeez. I wish I knew. I wasn't very familiar
with London then, so I only knew where I was
by checking the Tube map. As a further clue,
I was sheltering from the rain, so there must
be some kind of overhanging building above -
to the point where the pavement gets wet.
The other thing is - I was there as a
tourist, so there must have been some reason
to go there, like a gallery. Other than that,
I may have to call CSI.
05 Февраль 2010, 14:48 gumanow I would suggest that you submit this to "guesswherelondon" as a group photo. I'm sure some peeps might know where this is. I love the silo of the peeps in this photo.
05 Февраль 2010, 17:44 Herschell Hershey Great idea, gumanow. I'll do that. The next photo in this stream provides a further clue - some concrete pillars.
06 Февраль 2010, 08:06 get down The wide road and trees suggest you're on Millbank, and the rounded pillars and overhang implies Millbank Tower. That could be the IMO on the left on the far side of the river, and London Fire Brigade headquarters on the right. But I could be wrong.
06 Февраль 2010, 08:07 Herschell Hershey That might work - I could have been at the Tate gallery.
06 Февраль 2010, 19:22 tiny_tear the hint might be on the buildings being built on the other side of the river... trying to see what was built in 1982
07 Февраль 2010, 17:29 dipfan Maggie Maggie Maggie, out out out ... sorry, since it's 1982 I got nostalgic.
07 Февраль 2010, 22:45 Eddie Truman
Apart from the geographic poser, this is a
great photo, took me back to 1982, not a
happy time.
She eventually did go out out out but only
after destroying whole communities. I still
see the damage everyday.
08 Февраль 2010, 00:01 Herschell Hershey Thanks eddiet. And apologies for raising the grim spectre of mrs t.
08 Февраль 2010, 03:51 Capo2 I'm with Get Down, look how wide the embankment is here, if it's on the North bank of the Thames, it has to be Millbank I think, nowhere else makes sense to me, although I think it is dual carriageway now. Just looked at Google Earth satellite view - there is a fairly tall building on the Lambeth Embankment which would tie in with the one being built on the left (immediately to the West of Parliament View for those who know it). The tree fits too, and if you get caught in the rain anywhere near Millbank Tower, it 's the obvious (and only) place to shelter.
08 Февраль 2010, 04:35 bushboy1976 Screams Millbank to me - am with Capo2 and Get Down. The wide road, the shape of the landscaping underneath the building, the wall by the river.Think there is now - sign of the times - a speed camera on that stretch...JF
08 Февраль 2010, 21:09 Capo2
The "Maggie Maggie Maggie Out Out Out
" tie-in is fitting - after all, her
successor's downfall was plotted from the
building Herschell appears to be sheltering
under.... and I now have visions of Gordon
Brown stomping round going "Tony Tony
Tony - Out Out Out!"
09 Февраль 2010, 14:14 Herschell Hershey Ok - if the building in the Note is in Black Prince Road, that's right across the river from the Tate, and Millbank, which seems to solve the problem. I'll try to cycle down there today to find the exact spot. Thanks everybody.
09 Февраль 2010, 15:39 Rolyatam HH, Just went to Millbank Tower in my lunch hour to check this out - It's defo taken from just outside what is now a Pizza Express looking over at MAritime House and Black Prince Road. The tree is a bit bigger but not much else has changed. If you don't get down there today I'll post a photo I took from the same spot when I get home.
10 Февраль 2010, 13:43 Herschell Hershey
Thanks a lot Rolyatam - you went well beyond
the call of duty, and thanks to your
excellent work, I was able to find the exact
spot. It is on Millbank, right by Pizza Hut
at the Millbank Tower.
10 Февраль 2010, 16:15 westvillagebob Twenty-four years in the life of a tree!
10 Февраль 2010, 20:58 Anti Matter Damn you all got there befroe I could lol. Today I went out and in the rain tried to find the same place, the original picture was taken. I found it, simply by thinking about the shape of the wall, and the building shape being built on the left of the original, together with what has been discovered is Black Prince road. I had no idea it was Black Prince road just the building was there then, looked older and would i was sure be there today to take a point from the original frame. I also go for a more hand on apprach, hmm maybe silly approach walking along the Thames and not using Google Earth, or other such means to find it lol. But oh well.Well much has changed, the tress..My god they have shot up. So with many bemused people looking on running past in the rain I managed to take two shots. I have posted one to my stream so you can see thow it is now. They were taken with a wide angle lens to to get as much in the frame as possible. Now home..I am not sure I lined it up as well as I could, but frankly in the rain I was not up for to much messing about lol.
10 Февраль 2010, 21:15 Herschell Hershey Hey Anti-Matter, I really appreciate you making the effort. I thought it was really interesting to see what had changed, and what hadn't.
11 Февраль 2010, 10:35 Eddie Truman
What a brilliant testement to the Flickr
community this picture and post by Herschell
this has been.
Would be a great tale for Guardian Online /
Media or similar.
And to take it back to the beginning; what a
great picture.
11 Февраль 2010, 11:57 Herschell Hershey I agree eddiet. I thought it was amazing. And thanks again.

12 Февраль 2010, 02:03 Velurajah UK Hi, I'm an admin for a group called *Central London*, and we'd love to have this added to the group!Nice shot
12 Февраль 2010, 11:52 concrete_living Fantastic! You can see how much the tree has grown in 29 years (I was 3 yr old in 1982)....Love the texture of the capture, straight lines not so straight, gives it a warm cosy feeling...
